Last Sunday 3 (yellow) gold coast 1600's ventured out into the hinterland
for a pleasant drive around some of the best roads around.
Eric in his immaculate 2 door, Arnie (who is new to the coast from
Canberra - yep he's the one in the yellow 1600 with the Canberra plates -
YAS-26c i think - i was asking about recently) and me driving the yellow
peril, with Shane (of the broken front x - member fame) as naviguesser. We
were due to meet the Brisbane guys at about 10.30 so we decided to meet at
Eric's at 9am and have a bit of a drive before we met them.. Eric led the
way and showed us his local knowledge.. We had a dream run through Beechmont
and towards Canungra over some truly amazing roads. I'm sure Arnie had a
ball and will be back up there soon for some fun. We saw very few other cars
and only a few bikes so we were able to get stuck into some hard driving..
You can drive hard without exceeding the speed limit ( by much anyway) cos
the roads just twist and turn continuously. We then waited at a major
intersection near Mt Tambourine for the brissie guys to get there..Once they
did we managed to have a chat and then decided to go for lunch at this park
that only Eric knew about .. There we were, travelling in convoy, - 8 x
1600's, one 1200, one sunny and one Subaru with Eric leading the way and
well and truly stuck behind a smoky old telstar. The rest of us were slowing
right down to get a gap ahead and then planting it and screaming up behind,
thru these really good corners.. the only problem was that at one stage I
slowed every one down to get a big gap (greedy?) and when we came round the
next corner there was an intersection and no sign of Eric.. The naviguesser
said "turn left" so i did and then I decided we were going the wrong way.
bad move!! I did a u turn and everyone followed me Hahaha what a
shambles!! We kept driving for a while and then from a series of phone calls
worked out that the naviguesser was right and I had stuffed up the whole
cruise..HAHA Eventually we found the right park and had a good lunch and
more chat.. Then we manoeuvred all the 1600's up the gutter and into
position for a photo opportunity - well all except one.. Why didn't he want
to join in anyway?? Oh well it looked great to have all these sweet looking
1600's together and was worth the little effort.. Then we headed back down
the hills towards Oxenford and the Motorway back to Brissie and the Gold
Coast.. U wouldn't read about it - we got stuck behind the worlds slowest
driver in a Falcon and had a really boring drive back to the Motorway where
Scott decide to leave his mate in Eric's car and just drive off up the
Brissie road. So we stopped on the motorway and waited for Scott to u turn
at the Dreamworld exit and come back for his passenger.. then it was home to
watch the Broncos whip the Roosters in the grand Final..
A great day and photos to come soon.
Thanks to Eric and Scott for organising it.. I reckon we should do a night
time run up there soon - less traffic??
cheers
Mick
