Julian,
You need a diff from an IRS car for the 1600 as in such a car the diff is
bolted to the body and the axles or half shafts are free to move up and down
independently of each other.
You can have a look at picture of Pete Liebig's diff and rh side 1/2 shaft
from the Ozdat site. This is a LSD with constant velocity joints instead of
universal joints , so this diff is far from standard but it's the only pic
of a IRS I could find.

On the other hand a "live" axle has the axle housing bolted to the body and
the whole structure is welded together as a single unit, so if either rear
wheel hits a bump the other side reacts in the opposite direction ie lh
wheel goes up over a bump then the rh wheel tries to go down a bump at the
same time - not a good idea for anything other than grandma's car (apologies
to the wagon folk)
