Andrew & Andrew,

Firstly, offset & backspace made simple is explained on this link along with
some other interesting 510 related tyre/wheel stuff. The article is written
by Kurt Hafer who is a 510 owner in the US, it's a good read but you have
ignore the US specific stuff. Also has some good pictures here to help with
the offset & backspace question.

Wheels for a 510?

It's a very personal topic this and it depends so much on what you use the
car for (street, dirt, hillclimbs etc), how much you want to spend ($$$$
Simmons? & Fulkans), what the suspension settings are, brake disc diameter,
track width to allow for guard clearance and a myriad of other things as
well as what is actually legal. In most states you are allowed up to 15x6
but the overall height of the wheel/tyre combination must not exceed +15% of
185/70x13 (which was the standard size of the 510 SSS on 13x5.5" rims) and
the track must not exceed 52.4" which is +1" of the 510 SSS. You are into
illegal or engineering territory if you want to run outside of the RTA
guidelines.

To satisfy all of this there aren't all that many choices sizewise but still
a fairly good range of brands -

the range of tyre sizes are:
14x6" 185/65, 185/60, *195/60, 205/60, 205/55, 205/50
15x6" 195/50, 195/55, *205/50, 205/45

* my preferred sizes, mainly as these are very close to the overall diameter
of the base tyre.

Most ppl who do track runs will still prefer to use 14" wheels as a range of
tyres at good prices are still readily available, although this trend may
have changed over recent years as 15" wheels have become more popular on
factory cars. I recently picked up a set of imported 195/60x14 Continental
Sport Contacts for $60 fitted that were 1/3 worn but the 15" were $80 but
still worth a try with 15's if you wish.

since i am looking at the moment - can anyone offer any advice about which
would be the optimum wheel/tyre combination for wicked handling in a 1600
(suspension etc. aside)..
