Mel,
Great
news that you're on the road. The dogleg gearbox is great when you get used to
it. A neat trick for the reverse gear is to fit a small buzzer on the
reversing light circuit, I did mine mainly to stop dyno and tyre mechanics from
running over their co-workers with my Datto.
The
backfiring with twin carbies is caused by timing retarded, worn
throttle shafts, air is getting past the throttle shafts or leaking inlet
manifold gasket and leaning the mixture - either way that condition needs
fixing pretty soon as damage can result. When the points are replaced the timing
needs to be set at 14-16 degrees BTDC. I'd get that done first and see what
happens.
regards
Terry
