For the L18 the proper way to do it is using a dwell meter and setting
dwell angle between 49 and 55 deg. If you then measure the point gap it
should be between .45mm and .55mm (0.018" - 0.022"). If its not the the
cam lobes/shaft in the dizzy are likely to be worn or there is another
problem.
If the points are pitted or worn and you are replacing the points with
new ones, allow for initial wear and set the gap on the high side of the
specs. Use some high temp grease on the cam aswell.
Once you have set the points you always need to check the timing.
You should be able to rev the engine and watch the dwell meter and it
should not change very much. If it does from memory it indicates the
dizzy shaft is worn and moving about.
Most people just set the point gap with feeler gauges because the cam
has is worn and it gives a better idle. From memory this
increases/reduces dwell angle and can cause timing problems and misfires
at high rpm, cant remember exactly.
