Andy,
This turbo could be a good score. Should be T3 pattern. May be ball bearing
type id it's off a later model. Which is good if it's in good nick. Bad if
it's not - because they are a throw-away unit. I've been told that they are
a good thing for upgrading the CA/SR turbos. Need to build a T3 pattern
manifold though - CA and SR both use T2 pattern.
Things to look for - play along the shaft axis as indicated below, plus
obvious things like damaged blades on comp and turbine wheels. Both should
be intact - sometimes comp wheels will have leading edges fretted away if
air filtration has been neglected. Exhaust wheel should only have carbon on
it - if it's got a thick coating of black stuff the exhaust seal is probably
leaking. This is best checked by removing the exhaust housing and looking at
the rear surface of the exhaust wheel If it is blacker than the rest of the
wheel then the seal is probably on the way out.

Bigger doesn't neccessarily mean better, it all depends on the efficiency of
the turbo. Newer turbos that produce the same amount of power as older
turbos are usually smaller due to advances in turbine technology.
