Thats right Cam
They crack along the rear where the turret is welded on and also around the
shock mounts. That is mainly from jumps etc.
They should have the subframe seams under the floor welded as well the
entire length of the vehicle (1 inch welds with 1 inch gaps)which helps the
monoque design cope with extra bodyflex caused by stiffer suspension and
more torque reaction.
Even with a full weld in cage like mine, seam welding is necessary so that
the body does not twist against the rigidity of the cage at the mounting
points, which also causes cracking. This is caused by the fact that whilst
the cage is extremely strong and rigid, the suspension and drivetrain are
still mounted to the body, so all weight transfer, torque reaction and other
forces are encountered by the body structure which has to compnsate between
these forces and the counter forces of the cage rigidity. This is why we
try and link all suspension points to the cage.

hello,
my dad and all his mates who have raced and done quite well in 1600's
say the best place to seam weld a 1600 is in the boot around the mounting
plate for the shockies as is racing and rallying the rough treatment caused
the ass end to fall off or something like that...
