Sounds like an identical story to my experience in about 1978.  Bought a 68
model at the auctions and driving it home along the then new Eastern
freeway, I wound it out to see how good it was. Just as I was coming to a
bridge, the bonnet rapped over the roof, bending exactly as you described.
Very embarrassing trying to visualise the road ahead of your, now vertical,
bonnet at about 140KPH.  Then pulling over and trying to get the bonnet to
somehow fit where it came from while all the cars you passed go by tooting
and being very uncomplimentary.
