Sorry, but you do need a gearbox!
The Z18 sits on an angle (8 degrees from memory)
and thus the gear selector will point towards the passenger.
I have seen a Z18 in a 1600 with an L-series box,
but the owner had angled the engine instaed. it looked hideous. 1/2 the strut
tower was sledge hammered to clear the inlet manifold!
