etch primer, mix of 2:1 (thinners to primer) that you apply to bare
metal(please correct me if i am wrong with the ratios guys)

i presume that the protective coating mentioned is the primer added to the
initial bare metal shell by the factory, looks red/orange in color on my
datto....not sure about others tho......personally i don't like pressure
cans, they are expensive and don't cover much at all.....
