List I may well be incorrect here, but the protective coating I was refering to was the zinc/gal dipping process used during the manufacture of cars in the 50's/60's and 70's. Not sure if they used a similiar procees in later years. The body was then primed (red oxide, the colour you see under your original paint), then final colour.
