Paul, you've taken the first step, its called networking. Spreading the
word about what you are looking for and making contacts with people who may
know who to can help you get what you want.
Try making contact with racing team workshops in your city, or visit some if
your from the country. HRT, Larry Perkins, DJR, Garry Rogers, FTR, could
be good places to visit, or engine builders factories, or specialist high
performance tuning workshops. Rock in and ask if they would let you do some
work experience on holidays, get to know them. Come back again and again
until they get the picture your really keen and wont be put off - your
persistent. Dont act like you know it all though - show you really want to
learn how its done.
Try to meet some of the people in the mechanics game by talking to them
possibly at race meetings or when visiting their workplace.
Follow up visit or phone calls with a nice letter and your school
reports/references from suitable referees etc to "the boss' (ask who that is
when you visit or ring up). Tell the boss how keen you are to get into
motor racing, what you are doing now and ask when would be a good time to
call about possible work opportunities. Be persistent but not overbearing.
Good luck!
