Guy,
the proper 180B SSS A87 had bigger ports ~38mm vs standard 180B ~32mm
the only other difference is the camshaft, Twin SU's and flattop pistons
and a recurved dizzy from memory. There is supposedly about 4 versions
of the A87, I've only seen the closed chamber small and large port. Just
get the common small port with 42mm inlets, 35mm exhaust valves and port
it to your needs to suit the cam. The other choice is a V912 that look
the same as the late model A87 with small ports.
You can get a rough idea of condition by pulling the rocker off and
looking for general cleanliness and the deposits around the valve guides
for carbon, cam lobe condition, broken/loose head bolts, stuck valves,
lash adjustment, head thickness(~107.8mm). If it's been sitting for a
while without the carby/manifold it's likely water is rusting the
valves. If removed check the head for excessive water passage corrosion,
if its been welded anywhere aswell.
If it doesnt pass my list I don't buy it, but I'm picky, better to start
with a good head than a bad one I say.
