If the gauge has positive and negative directions on the scale (usually the case with 
automotive ammeters) you will not cause any problems, the only possible problem is 
connection between +12V and ground (I've blown so many fuses in my multimeter by
trying to test voltage with the multimeter still set to read current). Conceptually 
you simply want to insert the ammeter in series with the wire carrying the current you 
wish to measure. Which way you connect the ammeter (still in series) will only
change the apparent direction of the current flow.
