Listers,
For a cheap, but effective mild port job I used a normal electric drill, one set of
steel grinders for cutting and one set of carbide grinders for finishing.
probably about $20 worth of grinding bits.
These type of bits don't like valve guides though - stick to the alloy.
The other disadvantage is the time it takes, but this didn't bother me too much.

I got a dud head from an engine reconditioner for practice and used a band saw to
section an intake and exhaust port to get a better idea of where and how much meat to
remove.

I was absolutely chuffed with the final result especially with just the extractors and
no exhaust :)
You cannot compare it to the Bluebird engine it was originally - definitely worth the
effort.

Regards,
Nick

Errol,
I've found that even the cheap high speed steel burrs do the job with
ally.Anyone in Perth, WA Salvage had them on special for $2 each.

James,

There were similar kits out about ten years ago. The problem with the kits was you ended up with a lot of coarse wheels that were not much use and not enough fine polishing wheels. There are better wheels around now where the grit is contained in a rubber like base. They are more expensive but do a lot better job quicker.

The cartridge roll mandrels they sell you in the kit are easily made using a piece of 1/4 rod and cutting a slot in with a hack saw. Most good automotive shops also stock the flat grinder wheeels in either soft or coarse abrasive grades. I find that an electric die grinder and some good P&N Tungsten Carbide burrs will beat the heck out of trying to grind material away. Even cast iron is easily cut with a carbide burr.

Cheers

Hi Everyone

I stumbled across the following DIY guides for Head porting and
block prep... they are working on V8 stuff, but the concepts are the
same for 4 cyl's....  thought they might be of use to someone...

Standard Abrasives - Do-it-yourself Guides
http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyguide.htm

http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.htm

http://www.sa-motorsports.com/blockdiy/blkdiy.htm

Has anyone ever seen or tried one of their kits?
