Jessica.
Datsun 1600's headlights as is most of the electrical system is earthed swiched.
Meaning they have power at all times.
That means when you flip the switch you are earthing wotever you are turning on to 
make it work.
Unfortunatly hallogens are normally setup to be earthed all the time and powered when 
switched on.
So you need to have relays put in to make them work by reversing the switching to 
powered switching from earth switching.
I think I have a wiring diagram or instuctions somewhere that I can email to the list 
if you need it.
I got mine done at the auto electrition though because I thought it would be wise to 
get the wiring for the headlights upgraded at the same time.
Extra heavy duty wires because of the higher current draw that the hallogens need to 
light up the night.
