Mick,
The dipstick holder on the L20B (B'bird) is in a different spot on the block
due to the front sump position on L20B. So when you stick a L16 Datsun 1600
rear position sump on the L20B the stick is not in the right place.
Solutions are drill a hole in the block to locate the dipstick in a better
spot or next time you do an oil change put in the right amout of oil for the
L16 sump and mark a new spot on the stick for max fill.
The dipstick may also have to be swapped between engines (cant remember, I
think the lenghts were different). I think that the level on your stick
problem is from in not going in properly due to the afore mentioned sump
problem. It is probably getting twisted.
Regards
Trev

Subject: Dipsticks
This is gonna sound funny but on my L2.0 in the 510 (ie L16 sump) my
dipstick reads differently on each side.
Its got nothing to do with my age or eyesight either... hehe the reading
varies by 5mm from one side to the other..
This is not usually a big problem but i have noticed that it is very touchy
in getting the right mix of enough and not too much oil in the engine.. the
last 5 mm when i am filling up the oil is disproportionate to the lower
levels on the stick to the extent that when i get to about 5mm below the
line i have to really slow down the oil or it overfills by 10mm on the line
but i'm more interested in ideas about why i would get a different reading
on each side of the dipstick..
any ideas ??
cheers
mick
