Why dont you get the SU's rebuilt?
Worn butterfly shafts leak air and make the engine lean throughout and you
cant get the right idle settings. Properly working pistons and dampers do
wonders for smooth running and good power. The right fuel hight is also
important so good needles and seat and floats are essential to keep the fuel
at the right level.
SU's are an excellent and very simple carby. Rebuilding them would be much
cheaper and give you a very usable engine with good power and economy. If
the SU's butterfly shafts are badly worn, you will be amazed at the
difference a properly fitted new pair will make to setting the idle, fuel
air ratios throughout the rev range and top end power.
If you fit a weber carb you will be going through a trial and error tuning
exercise until you get its jet settings, emulsion tubes etc correct, apart
from the initial substantial purchase price and fitting linkages.
