Eddie,
The rule is "if it fowls any part of the body at any time" it's illegal.
Bluebird rims have heaps more backspace than 1600/180B/200B so that's why
they are a close fit on a 180B. I've seen rims so close to A arms etc that
balance weights get knocked off, but if the tyre/rim doesn't hit then it
will always pass rego. The R31 rear discs are much the same to fit on a 180B
as a 1600, same deal with the bracket, perhaps a little more drama with the
handbrake cable and that's about it, there is a bloke who makes up cables in
Sydney for ~$140 (cheap) for a 1600, he might do a special order for a 180B.
The tyre clearance on the rear will increase 5mm with the R31 rears and if
you fit ~'78 200B struts with Girlocks you'll increase the clearance by 4mm
and get better brakes to boot.
To fit Pintara struts I'm told you have to remove the spring perch and fit
the smaller type from a 70's or '80's Datto or Skyline. Someone told me that
the angle of the stub axle is no good on the Pintara legs but I can't verify
this. I'd say it's correct though, if they were a bolt up then we'd all have
them on our 1600's as they're everywhere in wreckers yards.

Subject: tyre to strut gap Q
Hi List,
wondering if anyone knows what, if any rules / regs / guidelines are in
place in regards to the distance between the tyre sidewall and the front
strut on a 610 SSS? I measured with a set of 175/75/14 on early bluebird
rims and got 7mm, with my new wheels and tyres 205/65/15 I'll only have 4mm
tops, is this enough? I've been told you can fit the struts and brakes from
an r31 pintara, is this an easy task and would I increase the gap?
regards Eddie
