The only problem is the clutch pack will be soaking up the power that the
fan would be using at higher rpm. This is why those "viscous clutches have
cooling fins" to get rid of heat (ie energy) that they generate while
slowing the fan down.
Remember all that conservation of energy stuff they teach at school.
Go for a thermofan if you can fit it (equals free power if you think like I
do).

The fan is not fixed directly to the pulley, there is a 'clutch-pack'
in-between.
The clutch pack is a viscous, mechanical device that disengages at high
engine RPM.
It prevents the fan from spinning faster than 2500RPM.
This saves engine power and doesn't really affect the cooling capacity of
the car.
(A clutch pack failure causes the fan to lock to the pulley and behave as a
normal engine fan.)
Those baby BMW's 316, 318 etc... still use this type of fan.

sorry i am unfamiliar with this water pump from an auto L20 - so
you are saying its attachment to the rad fan is not fixed but through
a (controllable?) clutch, eliminating the need for (independant)
