Lachlan,
A stock 200B alternator is only 40 Amps which will handle 500 watts total
draw if it's in perfect condition. You will get away with ~300 watts total
head lighting as long as you haven't got a 200 watt stereo etc and expect to
run it on full noise out on the highway. A better alternator to use is the
Bosch 55 amp if you can find one, you have to look around at your wreckers
as they are fairly common on Dattos (lots of them on Blueys especially autos
I've found). If you run a high output alternator on a 1600 you are also
advised to upgrade the big white wire that goes from the alternator (Bat +)
terminal and the starter as the stock unit is good for 35-40amps before she
glows.
Even a 30 yo Datto will draw an amazing amount of power when you add up just
the engine (~80w), clearance & dash lighting (~60w) and then the heater fan
pulls between 48w, 72w and 96w depending on fan speed, and then if it's
raining (48-72w) for the wipers.
If you run centre high beams above stock you will need to fit a relay to
stop the light switch from turning into a gooey mess.

Subject: Re: Auto electrician required in Melb (alternator query)
Thanks to everyone for their words of encouragement, i have decided to have
a go at it myself. i have downloaded the relevant emails from the mail
archive and will try on the weekend. will the standard alternator on an
L20B handle 250 watt high beams and standard outer beams? What is the
formula used to ascertain this.
