Lots of work is needed, as the Escort engine bay is a lot smaller than a
1600. Mine isn't finished yet, but here is what needs to be done:
Lower crossmember by 40mm with spacers;
Cut off crossmember ears and modify to suit SR engine mounts;
If manual shell, cut out tunnel and enlarge to suit SR gearbox. Auto tunnels
should be OK if hit with sledgehammer, but still need shifter hole moved
back ~150mm and standard crossmember ears cut off;
Fabricate gearbox crossmember;
Remove master cylinder and booster, fabricate pedal box incorporating clutch
master cyl to suit SR20;
Plus then all the standard conversion stuff:
Surge tank, EFI pre pump, high pressure pump
Exhaust system
Fit radiator - need to cut out old radiator support panels and remake cause
they are too close to the SR20.
Fit intercooler
Get tailshaft made
Wire up standard or aftermarket ECU - your choice.
As far as brakes go, your engineer will have a minimum in mind, I converted
to Capri fronts and Mk2 Cortina discs on the rear.
The escort diff won't be up to it, and will definitely need to be changed. A
Hilux diff isn't too much work, I'm using a shortened Falcon LSD however.
Of course you would be mad to do all that without upgrading the suspension.
