If he's not running aftermarket ecu already, that would be a place to start.  Then get rid of the MAF, fit larger injectors, larger turbo (T25G, T28 or better), more boost.  That can all be done well within the capability of the 'un-opened' engine and would be the most cost effective dollar for power solution.  After you've spent that 2.5 or 3K and you have about 170 - 180 KW at the wheels and you still want more, you could then start looking at Jun Cams and sprockets, custom tubular manifold, bigger turbo and then maybe forgies and head work but you're talking BIG bucks then....mmmmmmmm

My mate asked me to find out what options he has with the CA18DET he just put into his 1200 ute, he is wondering what options he has as for a bit more gogo ( i don't c y ! it does 4th gear burnouts!) he is runnin about 12 psi I think, it has the manditory airfilter, intercooler, bov etc. We are just wondering what we can do internally ...... etc as it is standard internals for the mo. I personally think he is a nut ..... it is to fast already ... i had it over 200km/hr with the speedo winding itself around again ..... it's a beast :) he just had it all done, had it about 3 weeks then put it into a fence .... mind u he is over 30 and i am 17  :) hahahaha we are gunna put some weight in the bum and see if we can lower his panel beaters bill hahahaha .... so yeah ne help would b greatly appreciated :)
