Jordan,
Its all about inertia. An aluminium flywheel allows the engine speeds to
drop very quickly between gear changes making it harder to change gears in
town style driving. Also produces higher synchro loadings in the box.. The
material used for aluminium flywheels is a special grade of alloy and is
used in lots of race cars.
For turbo cars that have much higher torque outputs and also run high RPM,
Chrome moly has a higher strength capacity for abuse.
But is heavier than alloy. Chrome moly flywheels are better for street
applications than alloy.
Cheers
Feral Errol

L18 Aluminium Flywheels, just curious why they are race use only. And just
after some info on the advantage of having a chromolly f/w v Aluminium f/w
(strength oviuosly, do aluminium f/w have a very, very short life?)
Thanks
Jordan
