Ryan,

Look for new gaskets, they should look brand new still unless it was rebuilt
5 years ago and sat for ages, a good one to look at is the sump gasket as it
should be nice and new shiny cork. I guess whatever the case, you give it a
cleanup and tune, compression test etc and see how it shapes up. Another
thing about a rebuilt engine is that the oil should be very clean if it's
only done 200ks, inconclusive evidence but if it's as black as .... you've
got to be suspicious of the claim. It's not unusual for the tappets to be
noisy after a rebuild as things do settle in etc. The coolant should be very
clean too. There are little things that are telltale signs.

regards
Terry

Subject: Rebuilt L20b

hey list,
dad an di just bought a 200b wagon for parts. as dad has one of his own. hes
taking the manual transmission, struts, springs and various other parts, and
motor was gonna be put in my 1600. the l20 is supposeble been 'rebuilt' dec
2000. and hes only driven it about 200ks or so and the dif packed up so we
got it for only $300. now we are a bit sceptical about this motor and if its
been rebuilt or not. as we had it running at idle for only 5 mins and it
leeked some oil on the ground, the tappets are tapping, sounds weird but yeh
theyre making noises(easily fixed but) and the motor is hell dirty and got
surface rust.
so is there anywas of telling if its been rebuilt or not? ie taking the head
off and checking something?
any help would be much appreciated.
cheers,
Ryan.
