Robert,
Sounds like an extract from the alcoa engineering handbook as they have done
extensive testing in this area using all types of alloys/steels.They say that
with smooth finished steel that heat emissivity is only 10% of the same surface
with a thin coat of black paint. This is why most cars have black sumps. Its a
bit different with rough cast allows as this has around 90% emissivity of the
same surface with a thin coat of black paint. This becomes worse as the surface
get smoother. They say that the ultimate in heat emission is black anodising.
There also a bit on this subject in tha datsun race book on page 76 under using
your engine as an oil cooler. The datsun book refers to using a non insulating
type of black paint on aluminium.
