That's where 1/4 mile results settle all HP quote wars.
Try this gem. It's pretty accurate.
Horsepower = (Trap speed in mph, squared), (divided by ET in seconds), (times car weight in pounds), (divided by 1000), (divided by 9.1).
As an example, a 2100 lb. car which runs a 14.0 ET at 100 mph.
100 X 100 = 10000
10000 / 14 = 714.2.
714.2 X 2100 = 150000.
150000 / 1000 = 1500
1500 / 9.1 = 165 hp.
Horsepower is more related to trap speed than ET, try it.
If you drop the clutch at say 5000rpm at the line, you'll only post a marginally better trap speed than if you roll of the line, because you only loose a few metres.......sure your time will suck, but it's not as effective is you're trying to estimate power.
Also, if you test the car on a dyno at a 1:1 gear (usually 4th) you only loose approx 10-15 % power. It is crazy to hear people quote 200 hp at wheels = 250 hp at flywheel.
food for thought..........
dunc.
