Justin, I hear what you are saying about the cost of Koni's. I have just put a full set of custom made/valved in my race car. I must say, it was the best money I have ever spent, and would not think twice in doing it again.
I gained almost two seconds a lap at Eastern Creek over the weekend, by simply dialling in the new shocks (externally adjustable). If you are competing, the decision is how fast do you want to go? If you want to be at the front of the field, be prepared to spend the time and the money to get there. My knowledge of Gabriel shocks is that they are made more for street applications rather than competition - but I believe they are of a decent quality.
