I have 44mm intake (280zx) and standard exhaust valves in my 2.4 l20b. I had to get new seats put in - i think with a bigger internal diameter. the valve heads almost touch, and the valve stems are the same length. the new 44 mm valves were only $8 each.
This is a fairly common upgrade, with most of the expense associated with the installation of the new bigger seats.
