When you say you retard the ignition to get more power from optimax, I am assuming that you advanced the timing, as retarding the timing will give you less power.
If you ignition module is starting to die it will only fire sometimes, causing the car to run like crap and to not start. You can try to tighten the screws that hold the metal housing for the ignition module. As when they come loose it doesn't dissipate the heat correctly so the ignition module does not fire correctly.
Do you have extractors? If so you might have over heated the ignition module, I went through 2 modules before I found out what was happening to them. You will need to cover the extractors with some form of heat shield, like a thermo wrap or a metal shield.
If it is still firing incorrectly, shown by the tacho going haywire, after the above then you need a new module, like Ryan said. I paid $70 for one. I couldn't find a cheaper one.

I had a problem a while back where the tacho would spike and jump around
over the place and she would miss fire as well turned out to be the ignition
module on the dizzy easy to get as same as alot of holden ones I believe,
bit exy though although if you pay for a bosch one it will be better. and
put plenty of that white heat transfer compound under it (it should come
with it.
