Subject: help required - l20b ignition probs
List,
I am having some serious problems with my l20b.
I am running s2 bluebird electronic ignition, and a bluebird carb.
The problem started when I decided to retard the ignition a little to get a bit more power on optimax. This worked, however I was forced to fill with leaded petrol since the optimax had run out. I noticed a little audible detonation under load, so I advanced the ignition to compensate for the fuel.
However when attempting to start the car after work yesterday, it would not start. I found a blocked fuel line, and blew it clean - there is fuel being pumped to the carb - so I assume the problem is ignition related.
Finally I unplugged cyl no 1 ignition lead to test for spark, and the engine ran - on 3 cylinders. I then connected the lead number 1 and drove home.
The car started to run worse and worse, with the tacho showing random ignition breakdown and spiking.
-This does not change with ignition timing.
-The battery is charged and charging when running.
-I have swapped the ignition leads with no change in result.
Could it be:
-Damaged spark plugs due to detonation?
-Damaged bosch electronic ignition coil?
-Damaged s2 bb electronic distributor?
-A broken wire somewhere?
-An earthing problem?
Any assistance in finding the cause of this problem would be appreciated.
Regards,
David Thompson.
