Shane, Yes you can do that but i wouldn't count on always getting a direct response. You don't have to be subscribed to send to the Ozdat List, but you do have to be subscribed to receive mail.
What i would suggest is that you subscribe to the digest list which is just one big email that you receive daily that has all of the previous days posts in it - it's sort of like an offline list but you can reply in the usual way.
