Jimmy,
If the car has already been modified then 9 times outa 10 you're better off
replacing the box with the same type unless of course it's been butchered.
If you give us some details we are pretty good at identifying what box it
has, things like shift pattern, numbers on the side, where the shifter comes
thru the floor, tailshaft length etc.

It is a misconception that a tailshaft has to sit straight and by that I
take you mean it's not parallel to the ground rather than the shaft is bent
like a banana.

What is important with a one piece tailshaft is that the input angle on the
front uni is the same as the output angle on the rear uni i.e. the unis are
in harmony. This requirement is very often overlooked when a non-standard
box is fitted. You check this by drawing a straight line from the output
shaft of the box and a straight line from the input shaft of the diff and
these lines should be absolutely parallel to each other. If you have a look
at most 1/2 shafts on an IRS you will see that the shafts are on an angle,
even on lowered cars but the design of an IRS allows for this as the shafts
are one inside the other and can adjust to maintain the uni harmony angle.
This engineering requirement is not applicable to CV joints (different
science). With a two piece tailshaft each section must be in harmony with
it's output and input uni so with them the centre bearing mounting point is
quite important and another thing to consider if you modify such a car (some
bluey's have split shafts).

regards
Terry

guys

what is a good cheap, easy to fit box for a 1600?

I have an L16 at present and have some weird arse box that needs some funky
sorta crossmember to have it sit right......and then it sits way to low for
the tailshaft to even approach straight.

any ideas?

or better yet anyone in canberra feel like coming round and giving a fellow
enthusiast a quick hand........beers in it.
