From what I was told, when the car is running, ie. all warm, and you could look inside the combustion chamber then all the surfaces would be the same temperature. If there is a cold spot for the spark plug then you need hotter plugs, and if you see a hot spot for the plug then you need colder plugs.

What if you run a plug that is too hot? Will it burn pistons/valves etc or cause other damage?

Should you run colder plugs in engines that are being raced due to higher temps?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get the fine details sorted once and for all.

If you run too cold a plug you also can cause misfire as you are reducing the combustion chamber temperature. Which makes it similar to the situation when you first start the motor up, ie. cold.

What's the advantage of using a hotter plug then?

I use BP7ES.... they are a colder plug... and I've been told better for reducing detonation.... well thats what I had in my car when I had the DYNO Dun at the Nats

Subject: Spark Plugs for FJ20
Hi all,

I have noticed some discussion both on this list and others regarding spark plugs to suit FJ20 engines.

I have been using NGK BP7es now for a while and have not had any problems. I noticed however that many people are using the hotter NGK BP6es.
Which plugs should I be using? Is there any performance benefit from using the hotter plug or vice versa?

Any ideas?

Mark.
