Ozdatters, I am sure there are some electronics whizzes on this list. Firstly, radar detectors aren't a licence to speed. They just even the odds a bit, especially if you do a lot of driving. You can still get done by lasers and fixed cameras and anyway the signal from slant radar is very weak. They really only help avoiding Patrol cars.
I have some questions regarding modifying radar detectors to be un-detectable. The Police radar-detector Detectors work by picking up the characteristic RF leakage from the Radar Detector. If the Detector was in a metal box that was grounded to the chassis with, say, cooper braid, would this eliminate the RF leakage? The wave guide is made of die-cast steel I think. Is there any RF leakage from the Gunn diode in the wave guide? If not, then all the circuitry is enclosed in a metal box grounded to the chassis. How do you go about testing the modifications before you take it out on the street? A remote
sensor up front of the vehicle???? Cheers Feral Errol -----Original Message----- 2day list i acquired myself wot appears to be
a "Magnum" radar detector - i pulled it from a wrecked BMW 525 today.
It is labelled as a Magnum Model No. SRD-4000 S/N 60819656. Does anyone know
anything about these ? for example i have no idea if it actually works. It runs
off an external 12V DC power supply ( obviously cig lighter ). It has a green
and a red wire running from it - wot are these meant to run to ?? anyway any
thoughts and hints or information on these would be very useful - thanks in
advance. PS - i also realise that this is an old model
and would most likely be easily detectable by modern police radar. Cheers. Nick Hering
