If the regulator malfunctions, the battery gets charged at a very high voltage and 
gasses freely. That is why you need a vent.
Hydrogen in an enclosed space is dangerous.

Also if you have a big stack and are upside-down, wrapped around a power pole with 
petrol leaking everywhere you may regret doing a dodgy job of securing and insulating 
the battery :)
