Errol,
Thanks for the info. Looks like mine was as good as they come 2nd hand, may
be it's still OK and it's normal. I'll have to do a check on the breakaway
torque to see if it's deteriorated since i've had it in. At least with the
Datto type you don't have to lock them in before you drop it, not that I do
that much these days.

regards
Terry

Terry,
They have about 42 ft/lb new stock and settle down to about 35 ft/lb when
worn in.
They will break away if you have heaps of torque available during
acceleration. They are designed to have some slip to allow you to turn in
easier in a corner without the dreaded solid axle understeer.
Detroit lockers operate on a spring and dog clutch principle so they lock
both axles under power and release when you back off. Hence the famous
locker clunk!

If you let your diff go bang it will cost a lot more to fix (if it is
fixable) as the thing that goes bang is usually the hemispheres breaking.
I have my diffs upgraded to 65-70 ft/lb breakaway torque so the settle down
to about 55-60 ft/lb. This means an extra clutch plate and spring assembly
but is worth while doing as they really do work, but still have some slip on
the road when turning into a corner.

Cheers
Feral Errol
