oh, it's locked. Well I suppose the old bolts on the flange would do it!! Lucky they didn't drop out and let the shaft go, otherwise you would know about it. Loctite the bastards in.

So it turns out all the vibration and clunky noises were just the tailshaft and not the diff after all.
