List,
Unfortunately my 1600 suffered an engine bay fire yesterday morning due to a broken o-ring on one of the injectors. This dumped fuel at 40psi all over the exhaust manifold (wrapped in thermotec wrap) and started a fire. The first think I noticed was a faint but powerful fuel smell, which quickly went away. I dismissed this smell as being the car next door, which looked dodgy and was pouring out smoke from the exhaust.
I then noticed smoke pouring out the rear of the car in the mirror and pulled over. By this time there were flames coming out from all sides of the bonnet. The first thing I did was to lift the bonnet – big mistake! The flames jumped straight out and burnt my arm and hair. Shocked by this I let go of the bonnet and it latched shut again. I then emptied a $16 fire extinguisher aimed from under the front of the car and this instantly put out the fire. If I did not have this, then the car would certainly have burnt to the ground.
Moral of the story - always carry a fire extinguisher!
I would like to thank the guy in the extended port rotary 1200 ute who was the only one to stop and offer assistance. Luckily I have full comprehensive insurance with Shannon’s.
Thommo.
