yeah its mainly only when they are cold, plus they
arent jetted right, so if you stab the pedal under 3k rpm theres a fairly good
chance it will backfire

Have
you got flame suppressors fitted, they are supposed to lessen the chances of
you're webers igniting from a backfire - they should only spit a bit when
they're cold during transition from idle to main jets anyway otherwise your
timing is retarded.

yeah, ive got one bolted under my passenger
seat, my twin webers backfire a fair bit, i can see them catching on fire

Yeah i saved sum poor bastard one day ... i
was driving home & i saw this smoke coming form this fella'scar
on the side of the road.. so i grabbed the extinguisher (which i had b4
the car was even stopped)& ran & put it out for him... & i
dont thyink i would take my car anywhere without one .... way too risky
... but the only reason i had it is for doing autocross .. cos we have to
have one .... but i reckon it's one of the main things u need in a car ..
but even more if you have a modified car ( costs & effort & stuff)
... it's just not worth the risk !!!! Matt C

i had a 265 charger with tripple webbers, a
fuel fitting came loose, and i started to smell petrol....stopped
the car, lifted the bonnet and the whole engine bay was
COVERED in petrol........lucky it never
ignited.......
i also had a 73 jaguar, and i saw
this bit of what i THOUGHT was a metal bracket about 10 mm
dia, just protruding below the rear beaver ? panel, ( cant
remember what i was actually doing to it) near one of the
rear fuel tanks, bewdy, if i cut this off it will make it easier
for me, wirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr with the angle grinder straight thru
the FUEL line, petrol over the angle grinder, did i drop
that quick..... lucky that also never caught on
fire....

Same thing happened to my car with the
twin webers. Some fuel soaked into the filter socks and when the
car somehow backfired they went up. Luckily they just melted and
the fire went out. I didn't have an extinguisher on me and it
had to be put out with a rag. Anyway the only damage was melted
unifilters all over the passengers side of the engine bay. From
now on I carry an extinguisher with me everywhere.

save cars!
List,
Unfortunately my 1600 suffered an engine bay fire yesterday
morning due to a broken o-ring on one of the injectors. This dumped
fuel at 40psi all over the exhaust manifold (wrapped in thermotec
wrap) and started a fire. The first think I noticed was a faint but
powerful fuel smell, which quickly went away. I dismissed this smell
as being the car next door, which looked dodgy and was pouring out
smoke from the exhaust.
I then noticed smoke pouring out the rear of the car in the
mirror and pulled over. By this time there were flames coming out
from all sides of the bonnet. The first thing I did was to lift the
bonnet – big mistake! The flames jumped straight out and burnt my
arm and hair. Shocked by this I let go of the bonnet and it latched
shut again. I then emptied a $16 fire extinguisher aimed from under
the front of the car and this instantly put out the fire. If I did
not have this, then the car would certainly have burnt to the
ground.
Moral of the story - always carry a fire extinguisher!
I would like to thank the guy in the extended port rotary 1200
ute who was the only one to stop and offer assistance. Luckily I
have full comprehensive insurance with Shannon’s.
