When you weld a diff, I believe you have to do it slowly, not getting it too hot.  Do a bit, then stop, then do a bit more and so on.  If you get it too hot, you can damage the diff.  Not sure if it is to do with warpage, or possibly heat treating the gears and making them brittle.
Just something I heard.

A mate of mine locked the diff in his escort this way. He said he just kept pouring in the weld, using a mig. Said it was still hot the next day.

I would reckon start by welding the planetary gears, then keep welding.
