I'll
vouch for this problem. When I put the 200b struts, discs and hilux
calipers on my car I ground down the little lip on the end of the control
arm. I still run the backing plates and once it pushed the plates into the
disc. It happened to the drivers side on an extreme left hander (off
camber as well) corner. I replaced the ball joint a few days later as it
was clunking for a while and since then no disc scraping. I would
recommend grinding down the little lip on the control arm
though!

I've
seen this a few times. There was a picture on the Adelaide website showing the
damage that can happen to a disc that had the backing plate removed which was
caused by a control arm and it's very destructive.
It
usually occurs when you go from the longer 71-72/1600 struts to
200B/240K and on the problem car I saw the balljoints were
totally shot. The static clearance between the backing plate and the control arm
is ~1/8-3/16" and the clearance from the backing plate to the disc is
~3/16" - 1/4" so you can see how much movement the balljoints have to have
in them for contact to occur. If the play in the balljoints is bad enough then
the risk of getting rid of the backing plate is that the control arm will just
munch the disc and I wouldn't recommend that you do this. Some ppl with lowered
front ends have taken 1/8" off the end of the control arms and this seems to
have no detrimental effect.
