Brett,

You mean as in o thermostat fitted - if so then that's very likely as it does regulate the temperature. The 1600 gauge doesn't register below ~160F and in this cool weather that's about right. You shouldn't run an engine under temperature as the oil is designed to lubricate properly at around 180F water temp. With modern day oils it's not as big of a problem as in years gone by but you still should run coolant and a thermostat.

regards
Terry

Subject: weird temp gauge

list, i've just pulled the thermostat out of my car (pretty sure it was busted) took the car for a drive and the temp gauge will barely move, even though the motor + radiator are nice and warm (there are no blockages in the system) any ideas?
thanks
brett
