Justin, This article will explain the connections for a Hitachi alternator.
The vertical connection is the Field wire and that drives the Charge light and; the horizontal connection is the Neutral and it fires the regulator into action. **************************************************************************** *** Hitachi External Reg Alternator connections on a 510 (1600) 1. White or White/red (thicker wire) - Active (Bat) 2. Yellow - Neutral ( -- ) 3. White/black - Field ( | ) 4. Black - Earth (Ground) Now some looms also have a smaller white wire that is connected to the Active (Bat) connection and on the loom with the plug this wire isn't in the plug but direct to the Active (Bat) terminal. If yours has the smaller white wire note that you have it as it must go back onto the IR Alternator on the same place i.e. Active (Bat) terminal. External Regulator wiring. Again there was a connector plug on the original loom which you disconnect and discard the External regulator. On the loom side plug you are looking for the following wires. 1. Black - Earth (ground) 2. White/Black - Field 3. Yellow - Neutral 4. White - Active 5. Black/White - Ignition (+12v) or White/Blue (some autos and Canadian spec, I'm assuming you have a PL510 as P510 (RHD) are different again) 6. White/Red - Light (CHG) Connections. IR Alternator - exactly the same as the External Reg model External regulator plug on the loom - You can make up 2 pigtail wires with small male connectors on each end that will fit the existing plug if you wish to preserve the original wiring or you just cut the 4 wires and fit connectors to join them up. You only use 4 wires for the IR alternator.
