Damien,
I have
used an 88C thermostat in Canberra and you wont have any problems as such if
your cooling system is in good shape, i.e. no leaks, cap running to pressure
spec etc but importantly you'll need to fit an overflow/recovery system as
the increased expansion will pump a lot more coolant out the overflow. Having
said that, a 1600 heater is usually quite toasty with a 82C as long as it's not
full of sediment etc so I'd recommend that you give the heater a reverse flush
and try that first as the results can be quite spectacular. Also, with a Smiths
heater you'll find over time that the heater tap wont open all the way and they
seem to block about 25% of the flow and that translates into a warm instead of
hot heater, so if you've got one of these reach down and push the tap all the
way open and notice a considerable difference. Finally, finding a thermostat
that can hack Canberra's cold temperatures isn't easy - I've tried a lot of them
over 30 years living here and the average aftermarket stat just can't hack the
pace for very long. They usually work for a month or two and then start opening
too early and will run to the left of the "T" which temp wise is
around 76C and your heater will only run at 3/4 capacity. I've put in a
Nissan stat this year and so far it works really well and holds 80-82C even in
the sub-zero mornings we've had this year, it will be interesting to see how
it's going in a couple of months time.
Stat
problems in Canberra seems to be a Datto problem though and I've struck it with
all of the 1600's I've had. I've only changed the stat in our Toy with
climatic control once since 1986 and it has never missed a beat and is working
perfectly this year as well - (shrug).
regards
Terry
