Malcolm, Whiteing - you mean White King? That stuff will remove your finger prints so no wonder it works. I wouldn't get it too close to the paintwork.

If you use just a wee bit of whiteing powder in 1 litre of water ,wipe in on and wipe if off,if you have a dirty spot it will be white and you can see it.
