Johno, I've heard the Yokohama A509 is good both on and off road. (ok so it's no rally tire but it grips surpisinly well for a road tire) A friend of mine was doing some marshaling for a rally and he did a partion of the rally in his Stanza with A509s and he got a faster time than some of the rally cars! If you've ever looked at a A509, it has a pretty chunky tread pattern and combined with a soft rubber gives good grip on the gravel.
Unfortunatly Yokohama decided to discontinue the A509 with the release of their new A539 replacement. It sposed to handle as well in the dry and 30% better in the wet, bit I'm thinking it won't handle as well at the A509 on the rough stuff. Pitty. On another note, if you want a cheap tire to go off-road in, that doesn't have the horrable lack of traction that rally tires have on road. then I suguest you buy some M+S tires (mud and snow) best option would be to have 2 sets of wheels, one with road tires, the other with the M+S tires. I had a set of Bridgestone M+S tires on my datto for a year and the off-raod handleing was great, I used to go down all sorts of muddy logging tracks and not get bogged, good grip on the gravel too. Handleing isn't so bad on the black stuff either, but when it rains, watch out! If fact the rubber compound was so soft that they didn't even squeal on the road! Anyhow, that's worth a look, they only costed me $65 a corner new (yes new!) for a 185/70/14. Go pester your local Bridgestone dealer for some. hope that helps, James Cox > >hey people > >i am in the market for some new tires for my car.
