Joel,
1600? I'll guess that it is.

The main areas an engineer will look at.

brakes - min 200B with stock drums in NSW, they may require similar to source vehicle i.e. vented fronts. They will do a brake test which varies and some brake tests are quite rigorous.

Exhaust - noise less than whatever the DB is in Vic (75?) and they could require a CAT fitted if you've converted to use (P)ULP fuel. Tailpipe must pass through rear xmember as per stock.

electrics - neat and tidy and doesn't look like a spaghetti factory under the bonnet, battery if in the boot (I've never seen an FJ/1600 with the battery still under the bonnet) is vented and in an approved box etc and secure of course, I struck one engineer that want the boot re-enforced under the battery and so did Fergy so we put a piece of checker plate in there now, and the main battery lead is routed inside the car and it is insulated.

fuel - if converted to ULP the correct filler is fitted, surge tank (external) is secure and no petrol smells, wiring and plumbing is tidy and secured (cable ties are good0

trans tunnel - if cut to fit FJ gearbox then he'll check that it is re-enforced correctly and no sharp edges visible etc

front xmember - if you've used a bought one show him the receipt as they know who does good work and who doesn't - SSS is NSW RTA approved and probably Maddat is approved in SA - I've used the same SSS receipt for 3 or 4 conversions which is very naughty I know but they have never even looked very closely at any of them and only the first one I used was the bought one.

Engine mounts - they'll look at them and check that their not cracked etc - if they look new it will only be a glance.

Some of them will look at the regular safety items while they're at it;

wheels - legal width and diameter, tyres good etc
suspension - legal height, springs are captive, shocks not leaking etc
steering and control arms, ball joints etc - no play etc
body - no sharp edges or rust in bad places i.e. structural

I'm sure I've missed a few things but that's a bit of a list to start things off on this discussion.

regards
Terry

Subject: Engineers certificate in Melbourne

Hi Guys,
Could anyone recommend an engineer in Melbourne, preferably over the western side, that can do a report on my car? It's fitted with an FJ20.  Also what mods have you guys had to do to get your cars to pass.
Thanks,
joel
