Bob,

If the 6 cyl Hitachi dizzy is anything like the 4 cyl variety then it will
have 2 adjusting bolts. It doesn't look like there are any 6 cyl ppl around
at the moment so I'll have a bash at this from a 4 cyl perspective and hope
that it's not a load of crap.

The lower bolt (10mm) that's visible and very near the graduated timing
marks that you referred to is not the primary adjustment but is often used
for such by ppl who are familiar with the features of the Hitachi dizzy.
There is another adjusting bolt facing downwards on the block side that's
8mm (on the 4 cyl).

To zero the graduated timing marks, you loosen the 10mm nut and move the
dizzy to the 0 degree mark. Then you loosen the 8mm bolt and time the engine
using whatever equipment that you are familiar with eg timing light etc. Now
you have the ability to advance or retard the engine relative to the primary
setting by a definitive amount simply by using the scale without hooking up
a timing light - pretty simple but no where near as sophisticated and the
vernier adjuster on other dizzies eg Denso 6 dizzy.

To the best of my knowledge there is nothing that's adverse to the engine
with regards to the positions of primary or secondary settings as long as at
the end of the day it's timed correctly. The way that your dizzy is set now
certainly doesn't mean conclusively that there is anything wrong with the
orientation of the dizzy, unless it will not time correctly using the method
that I have outlined above.

regards
Terry

Subject: Dizzy a tooth out?

Hello membersozdat,

Further to my spark plug question, I was looking at the timing marks
on the bottom of the distributor, and noticed that my distributor is
advanced as far as it goes. Thinking that this couldnt be the way
things are meant to be, I started retarding it a bit, and it started
running like crap, I am thinking that the distributor has been put
in a tooth out or something, any opinions?
