Chris, This could be a bit of a challenge for a cold & wet Monday evening - I may need more info though to get it absolutely correct - such as:
What are the colours of the wires on your tacho? I've covered the common ones below. How do you power your coils on the ignition (+ve) side?- there a couple of ways the do this i.e. use a splitter or in parallel or separate feeds from the ignition switch and the latter isn't going to work with an impulse tacho such as a stock 1600 SSS type but the other two types should work (all things equal). How many coils are we talking about here? 4? Thinking about this, it should not matter how many, what really does matter is how they are wired up. For a 1600 tacho to work with multi-coils, you would need to run a single ignition feed to somewhere very close to the coils, then connect both of the white tacho wires (other colours are also used, the wires I'm talking about are the ones looped and not the ones that goes through the rubber grommet) to a figure 8 wire (with a trace to identify each end) and run it into the engine bay to a position also very close to the coils (the close proximity to the coils is the key to making this work). The top white wire connects via one of the figure wire in the figure 8 to the ignition feed (from the ignition switch), the lower white wire via the other figure 8 wire to a splitter (I'll cover the other option later), then from the splitter run the number of wires required to power the coils. Now some coil packs are wired in parallel i.e. the +ve ignition feed goes to +ve terminal on coil #1, then goes to the +ve terminal on coil #2 and so on. If your coils are wired like this then it's a bit easier to wire in the 1600 tacho as you don't need the splitter. You just connect the lower white wire from the tacho via the figure 8 wire to the first coil and you should be in business. If possible, I'd test hook this up before you do serious wiring etc - I've tried to keep this fairly generic, but most modified wiring done for transplants (especially by auto sparks who hope they never see the car again) can be a bit tricky to figure out. Also, you've got another two wires on the tacho that go through the rubber grommet I haven't covered and the colours also vary - What colours are they? common is red & green. Red is +12v power, green is the earth (ground). If you have the stock housing you've also got lighting to hook up, and the wiring for that is pretty obvious. Have fun with it, the first time you read this it may seem pretty complicated to you but it's not really, I just covered a few variants. A technique that I sometimes use with a written article like this (i.e. with options), is to identify what colours etc you have and run a highlighter pen through the bits that apply to your set-up. regards Terry -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Chris Dorgan Sent: Monday, 12 August 2002 1:16 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Tacho wiring for 1600 hi all, I have got a 1600 sedan with fj20t running micotech MTX8 with multi-coil ignition. I have the rpm readout on the microtech display screen, but was wondering if anyone knew how to wire up the standard 1600 tacho as well?
